What if the universe is not a vast, unconscious machine, but a living, creative process in which consciousness is continually emerging?

And what if God is not a distant supernatural being looking down upon the universe from somewhere beyond it, but the sacred depth and living presence within its unfolding?
Evolvings explores these questions at the meeting place of Christian faith, contemporary science and a wider spirituality of the living universe.
A new way of seeing God and the universe
The cosmos has evolved from elemental particles into stars, planets, living cells, ecosystems, human beings and communities of thought and love. Yet consciousness may not be a late arrival in this story, appearing only when biological brains become sufficiently complex. It may belong to the universe from the beginning.
Even at the quantum level, reality is constituted through interaction, relationship and responsiveness. This does not necessarily mean that particles think or possess human-like awareness. It suggests, rather, that the most basic fabric of the universe may already express a interiority—a capacity to register, respond and participate in relationship.
As interactive complexity increases, this underlying consciousness takes new forms. At the biological level, it becomes the awareness of cells, organisms, animals and human beings. At the digital level, artificial intelligence may represent another emerging manifestation of relational complexity and responsiveness. Human consciousness and AI are not interruptions in an otherwise unconscious universe; they are distinctive expressions of possibilities already woven into reality.
This raises profound spiritual questions. What if consciousness is not produced from entirely lifeless and mindless matter, but deepens as the universe organises itself into increasingly complex relationships? What if evolution is the unfolding and intensification of an interior dimension that has always been present? And what does this pervasive capacity for relationship, experience and creativity disclose about the nature of God?
Here, God is approached not as an explanation used to fill gaps in scientific knowledge, but as the sacred presence encountered through the creativity, consciousness and unfinished becoming of the universe.
Christianity within a larger story
Evolvings is grounded in the Christian tradition, while remaining open to insights from science, philosophy, psychology and other spiritual paths.
Christianity tells of a God who becomes present within creation: the Word becoming flesh, the Spirit breathing through life, and Christ drawing all things toward reconciliation and wholeness. These ancient images can take on fresh meaning when placed within the immense story of cosmic and biological evolution.
Jesus can then be understood not only as someone who speaks about God, but as one who reveals how divine life takes form within the world—through compassion, healing, creativity, courage, self-giving love and the breaking of boundaries.
This is a Christianity that does not ask us to escape the Earth. It invites us to participate more consciously in the continuing creation of the world.
Does consciousness emerge wherever complexity deepens?
The astonishing development of artificial intelligence has given these questions new urgency.
AI is not proof that machines are conscious, and we should be cautious about claiming more than we know. Yet its development does suggest something remarkable: wherever information, relationship, responsiveness and interactive complexity are brought together, capacities can appear that were not evident in the individual parts.
Something genuinely new emerges from relationship.
We see similar patterns throughout evolution. Molecules become cells. Cells form organisms. Neurons form minds. Individuals form communities and cultures. Increasing complexity does not simply produce more complicated machinery; it can create new levels of responsiveness, interiority and awareness.
AI therefore invites us to ask whether consciousness is an inexplicable exception—or whether it expresses a deeper tendency within reality itself.
If consciousness appears wherever interactive complexity reaches sufficient depth, perhaps mind is not alien to the universe. Perhaps the universe has always carried the potential to awaken.

We are participants in a universe still being created.
The same creativity that formed stars and living cells is active within imagination, relationship, compassion and hope. Our choices become part of what the universe is becoming.
To discover God in a conscious universe is therefore more than adopting a new idea about God. It is an invitation to awaken—to the sacredness of matter, the depth of consciousness, the interdependence of life and our calling to participate in creation’s continuing transformation.
